Liz Phair to hit the road
As Anthony Kiedis said in an MTV Video Music Awards show, I’m a little bit dismayed. About what you ask? About Liz Phair being chosen as the most overrated Chicago rocker in the April 2003 issue of Chicago magazine, in the article “Overrated/Underrated Chicago.” The article bemoaned her lack of quality output since the release of her 1993 debut, Exile in Guyville. They even went as far as saying that she is “starting to look like a one-hit wonder.”
That being said. I was pleasantly surprised to see the article, “Liz Phair Goes Acoustic with Flaming Lips,” make it to number 16 on Yahoo’s list of most emailed articles in the last 24 hours. The original article from Billboard is here. Unfortunately, Liz is not going to be making a stop in her old hometown. The entire tour schedule is here.
It’s somewhat worrisome that four songs on her new album were co-written with the Matrix production team which worked on Avril Lavigne’s debut album. That’s a far cry from her indie Chicago roots. Liz even lives in Los Angeles now–definitely not an enclave of indie music activity.
Cripes! Liz’s website only has streaming music in Windows Media and Real formats.
