Here’s yet another article about Liz Phair’s new pop turn: Liz Phair Defends Pop Album, Chooses Tour Over Exile. The article is critical of her choice to have the Matrix co-write many of the songs on the album. The Matrix is the same team who helped Avril Lavigne catapult to fame with her album “Sk8ter Boi”. Lavigne is a young upstart of dubious talent. Whereas, Phair has long been established in the Indie community. She definitely took a huge risk with this move–attempting to gain a large popular audience while hoping not to completely alienate her existing fan base. The article points out several similarities between the first single from Liz’s album, “Why Can’t I?,” and Lavigne’s hit single, “Complicated.” I suppose Liz isn’t the only one guilty of going pop. Yes, Jewel was pop to begin with, but have you seen her latest look? The girl who used to live in a van now looks like a cross between Mariah Carey, Avril Lavigne, and Christina Aguilera.

Anyway, Liz is coming to Chicago: August 21 and 22 at the Metro.
