Bye bye, Courier
Hello, Times New Roman. The US State Department has officially banned the use of Courier in favor of Times New Roman—their idea of a “more modern” alternative. Since when was Times New Roman a more modern typeface than Courier? Times New Roman was created by Stanley Morison for Monotype and the Times of London in 1931. Courier was created by Howard Kettler in 1956 and made ubiquitous by the IBM Selectric typewriter. Granted, the difference is just a little more than twenty years. But, I suppose any typeface that doesn’t make your document look like it was turned out on a 60′s era typewriter is an improvement.
