Michael Gerson pursues his calling

Linda Wertheimer asked Michael Gerson this on Morning Edition today: “You have actually shared some space in the bully pulpit working so closely with the president. I wonder if you see this as the pinnacle of Michael Gerson’s achievement?” This is how Gerson responded:

I can’t view it that way because–and not to get too religious–but as a person of faith, I know that the pinnacle of my achievement lies elsewhere. I know it lies with my family. I know it lies with my children. I know it lies with faithfulness to the call that I think I’ve been given and that’s the call to serve others.

Gerson is leaving his post at the White House later this month. Listen to the entire interview here: A Final Word with President’s Faithful Speechwriter.

Jeffrey Goldberg’s article, The Believer, was published in the February 13 & 20, 2006 issue of The New Yorker. It’s the article about Michael Gerson that was mentioned in passing during the interview.
