City council approves “big box” ordinance

The Chicago City Council has approved an ordinance that requires big box retailers, such as Wal*Mart and Target, to pay their workers a good deal more than what the federal minimum wage requires. Aldermen voted 35 to 14 in favor of the ordinance. That’s one more vote than the minimum required to prevent a mayoral veto. This is significant because Daley does not support the ordinance. He’s worried that it will stunt economic growth and development in the city. Target officials preemptively threatened–before the ordinance went to a vote–to not develop any new stores in Chicago as well as possibly closing the ones already present in the city.
