Sorry, Louis

Dexter Building

I drove past what remains of the Dexter Building at 630 S. Wabash, this afternoon. The block surrounding the building was still closed to traffic. Firefighters were spraying the building down from the front and the back.

The Dexter Building was designed by Adler and Sullivan, built in 1887, and designated as a landmark in 1996. Unfortunately, it succumbed to a five alarm fire. It’s hard enough to get a building designated as a landmark. It’s even harder to see one destroyed after it finally becomes a landmark.

Chicagoist has more details on the fire.
